- The line answers a question about Codex. Altman had given Codex as an example of asking a team for "a really important but extremely hard mission": "we were way behind cloud code and it seemed like a kind of crazy kamicazi mission to try to beat them with a coding app". Asked "Why didn't you just give up?", he says it "felt like one of these few very strategic areas that was going to happen very quickly".
- In a separate answer, in the chapter titled "We are in the singularity", he says: "we are now like in the singularity like this is the moment". He adds: "I think it is both true that it is all one crazy exponential and any one moment is not like the tipping point and also that we are somehow in another one of those decisive periods where the curve can go one way or another". That answer does not mention AI improving AI.
- On compute, he says: "I would say there is relatively too much focus on algorithms that create better algorithms and not enough focus on data centers that can create more data centers, which in a world of robots and a truly automated supply chain, you can totally imagine doing".
- The quotes are from YouTube’s auto-generated captions, which do not label speakers and misspell some names ("cloud code", "codeex"). We listened to the audio at 53:15 to check the word RSI.
